Gerber Survival Series Ultimate Kit – Endorsed by Bear Grylls?

The Bear Grylls survival kit by Gerber (pictured below) may appear to be complete and of high quality, but it falls short and the numerous reviews confirm this… by a long shot. Of course, what can one really expect for $35.00

I am surprised that Bear Grylls would stand behind a product that contains so many items that would not likely stand up in real survival situations! Mind you, one has to wonder how well any of us would survive if we actually did what Bear Grylls does in his show – I mean really, the number one thing any survivalist knows, is that you never do anything risky that could cause bodily harm unless you have no other choice – Bear Grylls is constantly moving fast and taking extreme risks that go against everything you may hear, see or read in regards to survival.

So it should not be a surprise that this kit “falls” short too!

Stove In A Can – Portable Outdoor Cooking Kit

If there is one item I would put at the top of my list for survival gear it has to be the Stove-In-A-Can Kit! For $30 you get everthing you need to cook for up to 4 hours. Unlike many compact cook stoves this one gives off a generous amount of heat and cooks fast.

Key Features:

  • Unique and patented all-in-one cooking platform that boils water in 5 minutes after fully ignited and cooks for 4 to 5 hours
  • Each Stove In A Can includes everything necessary for cooking – 4 fuel cells (app. 1 hour of cooking time each), fuel ring, cooking ring, and waterproof matches
  • Solid fuel cells – so no risk of leakage or dangerous spills
  • Uses a safe, water-resistant, non-explosive fuel source that can be stored indefinitely
  • Perfect for hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, tailgating, food storage, emergency and survival, 72-hour kits
  • 1/2 gallon can weighs app. 2.75lbs (with fuel cells)

This kit is ideal for any situation and can easily be stored in a vehicle, house, work place and bug out bag – anywhere you think best! In addition, this is one of few products on Amazon with “ALL” 5 star reviews.

Check out the Stove in a Kit here for more details and images – this is a great product and must have survival item!

Katadyn Desalinators

If you live near the ocean owning a desalinator could be the difference between life and death in extreme situations. If you live in an earthquake zone, all it would take is a massive earthquake to potentially render water supplies useless – if you even have water after water lines are damaged contamination would be a major concern.

There are many situations that could force you to generate fresh drinking water from sea water, but without a good desalinator, it is virtually impossible to make enough drinkable water in short periods of time. So it makes sense to be prepared for the worst (and an earthquake is highly likely if you live in the Pacific Rim).

Katadyn is the only company I am aware of that offers a line of portable desalinators and they have a great reputation – good enough that they are trusted and used by the US Navy, US Coast Guard, US Air Force. The only downside? They are expensive!

The Yacht – A Goldmine of Survival Supplies

This is the first in series on critical resources that I’ll focus on over the next few months. These are resources that most people likely will not focus on in the initial stages following a disaster, especially if on a national or global scale.

In most cases the average person will look for food, fuel and other supplies in the most obvious of places such as farms, super markets, grocery stores, restaurants, stores, gas stations, tanker trucks, big rigs and so on. This is an opportunity for you to seek out less competitive sources for supplies, and one of these is yachts (sail or cruiser), larger ones in particular. Any yacht designed for live aboard capability is a viable source.

After all, these are really self contained living units built to provide all the luxuries of home away from any power source or fuel supply – off the grid but on the water.

I have worked on yachts and know first hand what a goldmine they are for numerous supplies, and unless you are familiar with them, you will not know what these are. Below is a partial list of what one can find a typical yacht over 40′ (13 m).

What Do You Know About Nuclear Energy?

How much do you know about nuclear energy produced throughout the world? How many major accidents have there been? Who has the most nuclear reactors and more…

To find out, take this Nuclear Power Quiz I found on the National Geographic website.

Potassium Iodide Tablets

With the horrible aftermath of the massive earthquake in Japan and nuclear plant disaster it becomes apparent how quickly critical resources can disappear… such as Potassium Iodide!

Why Potassium Iodide? In a radiation emergency, radioactive iodine may be released in the air. This material may be breathed or swallowed. It may enter the thyroid gland and damage it. The damage would probably not show itself for years and children are most likely to have thyroid damage. The thyroid can “store” or hold only a certain amount of iodine – If you take potassium iodide, it will fill up your thyroid gland and this reduces the chance that harmful radioactive iodine will enter the thyroid gland.

I was amazed to see how quickly stock sold out in our store within just a few days following the earthquake in Japan, it seemed like overnight we had to find an alternate supply.

Review: Seed to Seed versus Seed Sowing and Saving?

Trying to find a great book on seed saving has proven to be fairly difficult. The only 2 with high reviews (4.5 out of 5) are “Seed to Seed” and “Seed Sowing and Saving” and the only books I have found, bought and read.

Now before we get into either book, one short coming in both is the “LACK” of pictures! Seed to Seed has a small number of black and white photos that I feel are poor quality, and Seed Sowing and Saving has “All” illustrations?? For any kind of plant identification, good clear pictures is so nice to have!

Both books offer enough information to help you save seeds, but neither is exceptional in my opinion.
